Herb died Sept. 26, 2010, at Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge, N.J. He was 82.

Born in North Bergen, N.J., he graduated from Princeton in 1949 and from Columbia University Law School in 1952. From 1952 to 1955, Herb served as a lieutenant with Naval Air Intelligence and was attached to Fighter Squadron 61.

While practicing corporate and commercial law from 1956 to 1971, Herb was also a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, representing part of Essex County. In 1969 he was named Outstanding State Legislator by the Eagleton Institute of Rutgers University.

Until 1977, Herb was with the firm of Becton, Dickinson & Co. in East Rutherford, N.J., a multinational biological safety-testing laboratory, where he also served as president of the life sciences division. Thereafter, he practiced law until he retired in 1997.

His board affiliations included the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, Carter-Wallace Inc., Cooper-Jarrett Inc., and Mountainside Hospital, where he served as president and chairman of the board.
Herb is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Diane (Loprete); his three devoted daughters and their husbands, Georgia Russell and Larry, Donna Ely and Lowell, and Pamela Senif and Thomas; eight loving grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The class extends sympathy to them all.
