Gus died May 26, 2010, at his home in Hopatcong, N.J.

He was born in Dover, N.J., attended Newark Academy, and majored in chemistry at Princeton. He earned his medical degree from New York University in 1940. As a lieutenant colonel in the Army, he earned six battle stars for action in Europe.

Gus trained as a surgical intern, surgical friend, and surgical fellow and in due time became a certified surgeon.

Gus quickly gained the respect of his patients and peers. His patients appreciated his honesty and humanity, and his peers made him chairman of important boards. Perhaps one of the most significant honors was being elected president of the Medical Society of New Jersey. He also was involved in many community activities. His membership on the Dover Board of Education for 14 years had to have had a positive effect.

Gus married Eleanor Jean Black in 1949. This most compatible couple did much traveling after Gus’ retirement in 1985 in their eye-catching, well-appointed house trailer.

We send our condolences to his great wife, Jean; daughters Karen, Susan, and Adrienne; sons Augustus III and Eric; and seven grandchildren. We remaining PONers also feel the loss of this modest man of strong character and great good humor who accomplished so much.
