Jim Zarfoss died Sept. 18, 2010, after a short and unexpected illness at York (Pa.) Hospital, the hospital where he was born. He died just weeks after escorting his daughter, Mitzi, at her wedding.

Jim came to Princeton from Red Lion High School in York and majored in economics. He was a popular member of Charter Club, and he maintained a number of Charter friendships throughout his life.

After graduation, Jim returned to York to learn the family insurance business from his father and grandfather. In 1984, after his father’s death, he merged their practice with another; in 1997, he left to pursue an interest in investment banking. He joined Susquehanna Capital as vice chairman, and at the time of his death was president of Susquehanna Risk Management Inc.

Jim loved the York community, where his family traced its roots to 1750, and maintained numerous volunteer commitments, including a range of business and nonprofit directorships.

Jim married his high-school sweetheart, Jane, in 1972. He was known as a gregarious friend, golfer, and bridge player, and also enjoyed platform tennis and wine tasting.

Jim is survived by Jane, Mitzi, son Jay, and his sister, Linda Zarfoss Elliott. To them, the class sends deepest condolences.
