Art died of kidney cancer Aug. 27, 2010, in Torrance, Calif.

He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., and graduated from Wooster School in Danbury, Conn. Art was originally in the Class of 1958. He joined our class after taking two years off to work at North American Aviation in Los Angeles.

At Princeton, Art majored in aeronautical engineering and joined Elm Club. His senior-year roommates were Pete Erlandsen and Ken Meyer ’61. He earned a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering at the California Institute of Technology in 1961.

Art spent his entire professional career with TRW in Redondo Beach, Calif., retiring in 1992. There he participated in a wide variety of projects, including underwater acoustics, ocean thermal energy conversion, and strategic defense.

Art loved aviation and was a longtime private pilot. He savored life and being with people, was unfailingly good-humored, and traveled extensively. His final resting place will be Yosemite Valley, Calif., a place he especially loved. His name will be inscribed on the wall of honor at the National Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport, which recognizes “those with a passion for flight.”

His former wife, Carolyn Griffin; his son, David; and his longtime companion, Maren Blyth, survive him. The class extends sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues.
