Baker served in the Navy from 1945-1946, and in 1950 he graduated from Caltech. He was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Oslo from 1950-1951.

In 1955, Baker completed his Ph.D. in geology from Princeton. From 1954 to 1956, he had taught at Northwestern. He then worked at the Marathon Oil Research Center in Littleton, Colo. from 1957 to 1966.

Baker became a professor at Rice in 1966 and taught geology. In 1988, he retired as professor emeritus. Each year, he had returned to the Rocky Mountains, and when he left Rice he retired to the Denver area.

Baker is survived by Janis, his wife of 62 years; his children, Amy and Hunter ’80; and two grandchildren.
