Hal died Feb. 1, 2010.

He graduated from Mercersburg Academy prior to entering Princeton, where he majored in English. He was on the wrestling team for three years and the tennis team for two years, rowed crew in his junior year, and was a member of the soccer team his freshman year.

Hal was a member of the Westminster Society and a manager of Cannon Club. Freshman year he roomed with John Deford, sophomore year with Deford and L.B. Mack-
all, and junior and senior years with Mackall.

Hal spent two years at Georgetown Law School before becoming a flying cadet and seeing action in the Pacific, for which he was awarded the Air Medal with clusters, the DFC with cluster, and the Legion of Merit. Hal returned to Georgetown and graduated in 1947.

Hal became a partner in the firm Sasscer, Clagett & Powers. He was active in the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, Maryland Tobacco Growers Association, and various historical societies, and was president of Marlborough Hunt Club.

Hal married Agnes Lansdale Sasscer and they had two children, Henry and Elizabeth. This marriage ended in divorce. Hal’s second wife, Julie, died in 1990 and his third wife, Jeanne, predeceased him in 2007. He is survived by his son and daughter; a nephew, Tjarda Clagett ’71; and a great-niece, Alidia Clagett ’05. To them all, we extend sympathy.
