New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will deliver the address at this year’s Baccalaureate ceremony, May 29 in the University Chapel. Senior-class officers recommended inviting the mayor because of his contributions in business, public service, and philanthropy.

Bloomberg, who began his career in equity trading at Salomon Brothers, founded the financial-information and media company Bloomberg LP in 1981 and built it into one of the world’s largest news organizations. He was elected mayor of New York in 2001 and is serving his third term.

As a philanthropist, Bloomberg has been the lead benefactor of several projects, including the public-health school at Johns Hopkins University, his undergraduate alma mater; and Princeton’s Emma Bloomberg Hall, a dormitory named for his daughter, a 2001 graduate.
