Charlie died Oct. 31, 2010, at Kendal at Hanover, a continuing-care retirement community in Hanover, N.H., 14 miles from his ancestral home in Thetford, Vt.
After Princeton, he received a master’s degree from Harvard in 1940 and taught history for one year at Salisbury (Conn.) School before serving as a lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps. He then continued his career in education at Dublin School in New Hampshire (1946-1956), Denver Country Day (1956-1958), and at Episcopal Academy of Philadelphia for 24 years, during which he was made an honorary member of the Class of 1968. A sabbatical in 1970-1971 allowed him to write A Short History of Thetford, which went through three editions.
In 1982, Charlie moved to Indianapolis, where he had grown up. He served for 15 years as an archivist at the Indiana Historical Society and wrote a biography of the well-known Hoosier, William Fortune. His other publications include histories of the Dublin School and the Episcopal Academy.
During the school year, Charlie coached cross-country. In the summer he climbed mountains in Vermont and Europe, where he often traveled. Charlie never married and had no siblings, but he leaves behind him a wide circle of friends, family, and former students.
