Bob died Dec. 25, 2010, in Missoula, Mont., his home for 44 years.

At Princeton he roomed with Dick Schueler, Charlie Richardson, and Jim McCaffrey. A member of Cap and Gown, he majored in public and international affairs, and began a lifelong passion for newspapers when he served as president of the University Press Club.

Following three years in the Army with service in the South Pacific and Japan, he spent 16 years at The Easton (Pa.) Express, becoming city editor. After earning a master’s degree at Ohio State University, he taught journalism there, then joined the faculty of the University of Montana in Missoula. He retired in 1990 as dean and professor of the journalism school. In his career he was honored with many teaching and journalism awards.

He took up running in his 50s, ran three marathons, and won many medals in shorter races with his son, Brian. With daughter Sarah, he started sky diving — including a dive on his 69th birthday and three after he was 70.

Bob is survived by his former wife, Jacquelyn McGiffert; son Brian ’72; daughter Sarah Matthews; and two grandchildren. A strong supporter of a free press, he wrote his own newspaper obituary with instructions not to edit any part of it.
