Bill died of a stroke on May 20, 2010, in hospice care in Chester Springs, Pa.

The Haverford School sent Bill to Princeton, where he joined Cottage Club and played on the 1957 Ivy-title rugby team. He belonged to the Glee Club and Orange Key. “Never one to pursue a straight course” (as he wrote in his 25th-reunion yearbook essay), Bill started at Princeton as an engineer, graduated as a religion major, applied to medical school, and attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School, graduating in 1962. He practiced law with his cousin in West Chester, Pa., for several years, served as an assistant district attorney, and in 1980, started a partnership specializing in family law.

Bill married Marilyn Gariepy in 1963. They had two sons, William and Glen, both distinguished military pilots. Bill noted in our 10th-reunion yearbook that his own military service was cut short by the Army when, at 6 feet 6 inches, he was rejected as being a half-inch too tall.

Bill sang in the Opera Delaware chorus, and with men’s and boys’ choirs in West Chester and Valley Forge. He also served as a mediator with Peacemaker Ministries, a group of laymen and clergy involved in conflict resolution.

Bill is survived by Marilyn, his two sons, and five grandchildren. We have sent our condolences.
