Richard died of lung cancer Oct. 1, 2010, in Huntington, N.Y.

Richard came to Princeton from Hotchkiss. He roomed with John McWilliams, dined at Tower, and majored in civil engineering.

He went to OCS in September 1962 and was commissioned in the Naval Civil Engineer Corps. Newly married, his first assignment was to Bermuda, where his son was born. He subsequently volunteered for two tours in Vietnam, commanding a Seabee battalion (naval construction) in combat situations. He left the service after five years with a Navy Commendation Medal.

After briefly working for a family construction firm, he went to Wall Street in 1970, joining H.N. Whitney, Goadby. He then spent 18 years with Shields & Co. before joining Ingalls & Snyder, where he managed portfolios as a senior vice president.

Richard’s passion was thoroughbred racehorses. His name shows up often as the owner on the winner boards throughout New York State. He also collected stamps and coins, fortuitously buying silver coins just before commodity prices soared.

The class extends its sympathy to his widow, Jean; his brothers, John ’53 and M. Llewellyn ’55; his children, James, Rick, and Kate; and his extended family.
