Archie Bard died of cancer May 7, 2009.

He was born Oct. 29, 1923, in Port Hueneme, Calif. His father was Richard Bard 1915 of Ventura County, Calif.

Archie prepped at Exeter and entered Princeton in June 1942. He left in February 1943 after enlisting in the Army Air Corps.

After his military service, he attended UC Berkeley, where he met Carla M. Henny, whom he married in 1948. The couple moved to Ventura County, and Archie joined the family business, Berylwood Investment Co. Four children — Gregory, Victoria, Thomas, and Jennifer — soon followed. In 1958, the family moved to Hollywood Beach, where Archie founded a mushroom business, Del Norte Foods Inc., which thrived for some 30 years. After his retirement, he turned to original multimedia sculpting.

Carla died in a car accident in 1997. Archie then worked on green-waste recycling, composting, and sustainable greenhouse food production.

In 2001 Archie married Else “Leinie” Schilling, and living in Montecito, they were immersed in travel, art, and cultural experiences. Even as cancer consumed his body, Archie maintained his humor and lively interests, using the Internet. He is survived by Leinie, his four children from his first marriage, and seven grandchildren.
