Wat Stewart died Jan. 22, 2011, after a long illness.

Wat entered Princeton from Hotchkiss and was active in musical organizations including the choir, Glee Club, the Nassoons, Triangle Club, and Jazz Band. He also was a Princeton marching band twirler and joined Charter Club. His college career was interrupted by service in the Army in Italy, where he was an air observer and an operations officer.

Wat was active in Reunions, and served 1945 as class agent (1980-85) and president (1985-90). Wat worked many years for Home Life Insurance Co. and also for Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Co.

Wat loved singing a cappella, as evidenced by his founding the Nassoon Alumni Association and an annual community a cappella festival called Spring Sing. He was an active participant in neighborhood associations from Princeton to Detroit to Kensington, Md.

An active church member, he was an elder of the Presbyterian Church in Princeton, N.J., Northminster Church in Troy, Mich., and Chevy Chase (Md.) Presbyterian Church.

Wat is survived by Mary, his wife of 66 years; daughters Sally Gilbert and Elizabeth; sons David and John; son-in-law Steven Gilbert ’65; and three grandchildren. The class expresses its sympathy to the family.
