Howard Brown died of stomach cancer April 29, 2011, at home in Kenosha, Wis.
Born July 31, 1923, in Chicago, he graduated from the Laboratory School of the University of Chicago before going to Phillips Exeter Academy. Entering Princeton in 1942, he served in World War II in Army Division 44, landing in Cherbourg in September 1944. After participating in battle in Alsace-Lorraine, he served in military government in Germany (1948-49). A SPIA honors graduate from Princeton, he earned a master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
First working as a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Sun-Times, Howard subsequently worked at the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Middletown (N.Y.) Times Herald.
He purchased the Kenosha News in 1961 and became president of United Communications Corp. and Media Innovations.
Howard was a community leader and philanthropist who received many awards and accolades. He also published the Great Class of 1946 50th-anniversary yearbook.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Betsy; their daughters, Lucy Minn, Sally Brown Russ ’85, and Amy Tuchler ’87; son-in-law Jim Tuchler ’87; a brother, Roger Brown; nine grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. To them all, the class extends deep sympathy.
