Jeff Penfield of Longboat Key, Fla., formerly of New York City, Montreal, and Syracuse, N.Y., died peacefully Feb. 5, 2011, of malignant melanoma.

A graduate of Princeton University and Johns Hopkins Medical School, Jeff served in the medical corps during the Korean War. He subsequently practiced obstetrics and gynecology for more than 30 years.

Since 1989, Jeff and his wife, Katharine, divided their time between the Northeast and Longboat Key. After retirement, he maintained his interest in the medical community and continued his hobbies — piano, singing, sailing and tennis.

Survivors include Katherine, two daughters, a son, a sister, and seven grandchildren. Jeff’s son will be bicycling in honor of his dad in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC), an annual bike-a-thon, to benefit cancer research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Donations may be sent to PMC with a note indicating “in memory of Jeff Penfield” to: Penfield, 1 Sandbar Lane, Orleans, MA 02653.
