We mourn the May 9, 2011, death of Harold Dick, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, physician, and friend.

Hal was raised on Long Island, N.Y., the ninth in a hearty family of 10 children. He became passionate about the field of medicine at a young age. Following his undergraduate years at Princeton, he went to NYU Medical School, where he became interested in orthopedic surgery. He completed his residency at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1966, serving as chief resident, and went on to fellowships in hand surgery and orthopedic oncology.

In 1969 he was appointed to the Columbia University orthopedic surgery faculty. He held the position of professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and chief of orthopedic surgery at Presbyterian Hospital from 1984 to 1998.

Hal also served as president of the Academic Orthopaedic Society, the American Orthopaedic Association, and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He retired from Columbia as professor emeritus in 2001. He dedicated his life to teaching, healing, helping, and inspiring others.
