Although his father graduated from Williams, Jim, fortunately for us, followed in the undergraduate footsteps of his older brother, William Dale Dana’ 51. Also, like brother Bill, Jim played soccer at Princeton and entered from Hotchkiss, where soccer was his main sport. Jim died March 20, 2011, in East Hampton, N.Y.

Jim was an English major and on campus roomed during his four years with Howie Carr, Stew McKinney, Bill Peabody, and Fred Wonham. He belonged to Cottage, and his clubmate, Joe Breneman, joked that he and Jim played “too much poker and pool.” Upon completing his military service, Jim attended Harvard Law School and was a respected New York City attorney until his retirement in 1996.

Besides his wife, the former Pamela Redfearn; children James D. Jr., Margaret, Hope, William, Timothy P. ’91, and Christo-
pher; and 11 grandchildren, Jim’s passion for the past 50 years was golf. Joe Breneman was so pleased with this that he and Jim renewed their friendship years later when they would join about 14 classmates for golf weekends on one of the country’s toughest private courses. Jim’s selflessness, kindness, and generosity affected the lives of many.
