It is just a bit scary to hear our ambassador, Ryan Crocker *85, as optimistic as he is over our exit strategy in Afghanistan (A Moment With, Sept. 14). Our aim when we went in there was narrow, but grew under the misguided notion that we could change the political culture of that country. I equate our efforts in Afghanistan to marrying someone whom you knew was not right for you, with the thought that the relationship would be good once you changed them. Many of us know how that story ends, and this should end the same way — and it should end with all reasonable speed — for our good and for our image in the world community.
