Jim, a born and inspired teacher, died June 16, 2011.

He came to us by way of Woodberry Forest School. He dined at Cottage while coming under the spell of Gordon Craig, Eric Goldman, Jinks Harbison, Buzzer Hall, and the greats of the 1940s history department. He graduated with honors in history.

Jim lost no time in getting immersed in the school scene. His first assignment was a five-year stint at St. Andrew’s School in Delaware, teaching history and math and coaching football, basketball, and baseball. Then followed educational experience at St. John’s in Houston, Spartanburg (S.C.) Day School, Woodberry Forest, and a final 22 years at Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Del.

He married Gertrude Myers in 1948. After his retirement in 1988 they moved to Middlebury, Vt., and maintained a summer home at Essex, N.Y., on Lake Champlain. Jim was an avid tennis player, loved to travel, and was a fantastic fan of the baseball Giants.

Gertrude predeceased Jim. He is survived by his second wife, Jessica (they were married in June 2005); his daughters, Diane and Katrina; son Hunter; four granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.
