Memorial George E. Muehleck Jr. ’41

He prepared at the Pomfret School. At Princeton he majored in classics, was on the freshman cross-country squad, and was a member of the Chess Club, the Oriental Club, and Terrace Club. He roomed with Lou Prince.

 

George came from a family of physicians dating back to the early 1800s. He entered Tulane Medical School, graduating in 1944, and then interned at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, where his father, George Sr. ’14, was a respected surgeon. Commissioned as a first lieutenant, he served 21 months in the United States and Italy, separating as captain in 1948.

 

Following his service, George spent a year at Kanawha Valley Hospital in Charleston, W.Va., before moving to Portland, where he spent a three-year residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He then moved to St. Helens and joined the practice of a local physician who unfortunately died shortly thereafter, leaving George as a sole practitioner, which he remained for the rest of his career.

 

An avid fly-fisherman, he still kept up his classical studies, and also became literate in Russian, Arabic, and Sanskrit.

 

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Irma Jean Drumheller Muehleck; four sons, Stephen, John, Charles, and Henry; and eight grandchildren.
