Bill, who had a civilian medical career that spanned more than half a century in New York City and who personified qualities of the worthy physician, died of liver cancer July 23, 2011, at his Manhattan home.

Affectionately called “Uncle Doc” by his nephews, nieces, and grand-nephews and nieces, totaling 11, Bill received his medical degree from NYU’s School of Medicine, and was first on duty and later chief resident at Bellevue Hospital before entering Navy flight school in Pensacola, Fla. He obtained his wings and spent two years as a flight surgeon. Bill’s brother John recalls that the top three graduates received choice assignments. Bill, who finished third, was stationed at Honolulu. On his return from service, Bill settled in as a clinical professor and diagnostician at NYU.

He came to Princeton from Western Reserve Academy, specialized in chemistry, belonged to the premed society, and took his meals at Campus Club. Senior year his roommates were Jack Mills, Buddy Syer, and Bill Webster. In addition to these relatives, he is survived by his longtime partner/spouse, Aalan Kobritz, who paid this moving tribute to him: “A man of great integrity, intelligence, kindness, and humor, he will be remembered and loved by everyone whose life he touched.”
