Steve died June 11, 2011, at Stanford (Calif.) Hospital from complications after heart surgery.
Born and raised in Denver, Steve came to us from Denver South High School. At Princeton, he majored in English, was in Theatre Intime and the Rocky Mountain Club, was active in intramural sports, and took his meals at Campus Club.
Initially a high school teacher, Steve earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Virginia in 1968 and worked four years as a professor at the American University of Beirut. He then spent 39 years as a professor of international policy studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California. As a scholar, teacher, and author of several books, he earned many excellence-in-teaching awards along the way. In 1978-79, he spent a year in Thailand on a Senior Fulbright Fellowship.
He and his Swedish-born wife, Marta, had a summer home in Sweden that they visited annually.
Steve is survived by Marta, his wife of 50 years; two sons, Eric and Crister; a daughter, Karolina; and three grandchildren.
