Wally died Sept. 11, 2011, in Glen Mills, Pa.
Coming from Exeter, he majored in chemical engineering, was on the track team, and joined Cap and Gown. He first roomed with Bruce Hallett, then with Wally Close and Fred Hubbell, and senior year with Wally Close, Dick Sly, and Jack Van Ness.
He left Princeton to work at Hercules Powder in Wilmington, Del., then served in the Navy and returned to Hercules, remaining until his 1981 retirement. With his son-in-law, Wally started a construction company.
Wally married his high school sweetheart, Jane Allen, in 1944. She died in 2004, shortly after a large family celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary.
Wally enjoyed the Delaware Symphony and Opera Delaware, bridge, league bowling, and the Wilmington Country Club, where he shot a hole-in-one at age 79. Wally was devoted to his church, Westminster Presbyterian, where he was a member for 44 years and served as a deacon, elder, and trustee. In recent years, he went to New Orleans on five mission trips with his church to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.
He is survived by his children, David, Wallace, Lauren, and Nancy; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
