The class was saddened to learn that John Maloney died Aug. 13, 2011, in Asheville, N.C., of cancer.

Born in Princeton and raised in Chappaqua, N.Y., John came to us from Hotchkiss, where he edited the literary magazine and played second base for the varsity baseball team his senior year. He majored in English at Princeton and was the Ivy Club librarian, noted for his nimble mind and sharp wit. In college he was famous for his parodies, including a long-remembered version of Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” a cult masterpiece to his friends in the class.

After graduation he served in the Navy aboard the USS Enterprise, editing the ship’s paper and receiving an honorable discharge. A lifelong bachelor, John devoted his life to the written word, writing and copy editing for magazines until 1980, when he joined The Editorial Department, a national book-editing company, where he edited mysteries, suspense fiction, spy novels, and thrillers until his retirement.

John is survived by his mother, Lucia Maloney; his brother, Robert “Mac” Maloney ’67; sister Bonnie Stevens; and his longtime girlfriend and business associate, Renni Browne, who cared for him until his death. The class sends sympathy to them all.
