(Mascot Books) This picture book explores the world of aircraft carriers, showing young readers how a ship that seems so massive to them actually constitutes a challengingly small landing surface for pilots. The purpose of the book is to acquaint children with U.S. Navy aircraft carrier operations, and the skill required of the pilots who take off and land on them. Weiland was a U.S. Navy pilot, and later joined Price Waterhouse. He is retired, but still volunteers at the U.S.S. Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum in New York City.
