John died June 22, 2012, at his home in Scituate, Mass.

Before entering Princeton in 1946 he served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945.

John graduated in 1950 with honors in psychology. Though he considered himself a “peripheral alumnus,” he said that some of his happiest years were spent at Princeton. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1954, and completed his residency in pathology at Boston City Hospital before joining South Shore Hospital, where he spent his entire career. At South Shore Hospital, he was director of the laboratory and also served as head of the medical staff. John was a member of the American Medical Association and the Massachusetts Medical Society.

In our 40-year book, John wrote: “Unlike many of my colleagues, I don’t play golf . . . am not a member of a country club. I am a member of the local Rotary club. We don’t have a vacation home, a boat, and certainly not an airplane. I don’t travel well and we’ve left Massachusetts no more than five times in 35 years.” John’s interests were mathematics, astronomy, Shakespeare, and American linguistics.

He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Lillian; three sons; two daughters; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. To them, the class extends deepest sympathy.
