Rick died May 8, 2013, following a five-month battle against cancer and lymphatic failure. He was 67.

Rick came to Princeton from Germantown (Pa.) Academy. Senior year he lived in 124 Walker and ate at Elm. He majored in psychology. Following Princeton, he matriculated at Columbia to study psychology. While there, he was drafted and served a tour in the Army, after which he completed his studies at Columbia, graduating with a Ph.D. in psychology in 1977.

His first job was in Portsmouth, Va., where he was a clinical psychologist with a number of practices in southeast Virginia. For one of those practices, he helped establish an office in Elizabeth City, N.C. In 1993 he co-founded the Albemarle Counseling Group in Elizabeth City. In 1997, he moved to Elizabeth City, where he remained until he died.

His practice focused on outpatient psychotherapy. He specialized in anxiety, stress, depression, pain management, and depression secondary to medical problems. At his memorial service, a number of his former patients spoke with deep gratitude and affection for Rick.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter Stacy; stepson Evan McMullan; and his brother, Peter. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Andrea E. Short. To Linda and the extended family, the class sends condolences.
