Clarence died Christmas Day 2013 in Vernon, Conn., the family home for more than 50 years. He was 87.
Clarence was born in Newark, N.J., and graduated from Newark Academy. During World War II, he first volunteered for the Merchant Marine but then was commissioned in the Naval Reserve. In 1945, he was a medic during the American occupation of Berlin.
After graduating from Princeton and from the Wharton School at Penn, Clarence had careers in real estate, insurance, and banking. An American history buff, he was a longtime guide at the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry, Conn.
Catherine, his wife of 59 years, survives him, as do their daughters, Regina O’Crowley, Peggy Wholley, and Anne Gobar; son Michael; and grandsons James and Julian Wholley.
