Brian Dendle, retired professor in the department of Spanish and Italian at the University of Kentucky, died Sept. 3, 2013, at the age of 77.
Born in Oxford, England, in 1936, Dendle graduated from Oxford University in 1958 and received a master’s degree in 1962. He was an instructor on the faculty of Kenyon College in Ohio from 1961 to 1963. He then earned a master’s degree (1965) and a Ph.D. (1966), both in Romance languages and literature, from Princeton.
Dendle taught Spanish at Kentucky from 1971 to 2005, and was the editor of the scholarly journal Romance Quarterly. Through numerous books and articles, he was known for his contributions to the study of language and literature.
Among his several interests, Dendle left behind a postage-stamp collection he painstakingly accumulated for 70 years.
He is survived by two sons and two granddaughters.
