I had no idea there has been a Wawa on/near campus. Where was it? When I was there in the '60s, Wawa was just starting to expand from its Rte. 1 origins south of Philly. When we travel south now, we scan our Exit Guide for Wawas when it's lunch time. We even got takeout supper there once and walked back to our motel room in Norfolk.

When I lived at the Grad College in the '80s, I had a working fireplace in my room. I used to walk up to the Wa in the winter, buy an armload of Prestologs, and hump them on back to my room to build a fire. Oddly enough, the authorities allowed me to enjoy my roaring fires (without screens, fire extinguishers or any other safety devices), but they would seek out and confiscate the little electric hot plate I sometimes used to heat up a cup of coffee.

Having lived at Forbes, then in Henry and Spelman, the Wa was a constant source of food, snacks and drink throughout my years at Princeton.

As I was in PIC/Forbes in 1985 and 1986, the Wa was the place to get snacks on a fairly frequent basis. It was strange to see it surrounded by scaffolding this past weekend when I was back for my 25th reunion.

I was living in PIC in 1978-79, and Wawa saved me from starving during the DFS strike in the spring. Most of my refund was spent in the Wawa as Hoagie Haven and Victor's were a bit far.

I worked at the Wa my entire four years at Princeton -- perhaps spent more time in that building than any other Princeton student. (To some on campus, I was "the Wa guy.") It was hard work and long hours, but my memories are fond. I will definitely miss my second college home, and it will be strange for the Wa to be in another place. But I look forward to seeing the new building, which will soon become an icon to another generation of Princetonians.
