The following memorial was posted online with the May 13, 2015, issue.

Gil died an untimely, tragic death in a house fire Dec. 11, 1980.

He went to Columbia Central High School (Tenn.), where he was captain of the golf team, senior class president, and valedictorian. Gil spent a year at Andover Academy before attending Princeton.

At Princeton, he played on the freshman golf team, coxed the heavyweight crew for a season, and majored in biology. Gil was a brilliant poker player, a deep lover of jazz, a ukulele player, a wickedly funny fellow, a wonderful dancer, and the life of a party.

Gil and Marilyn Biener fell deeply in love junior year - Marilyn typed his senior thesis, and Gil did her physics homework while she was attending BU.

Gil went on to Washington University Medical School in St. Louis and became an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand surgery. He married Marilyn on June 21, 1964. They moved to Cincinnati, and had two children (Julie and Michael).

The family moved to Middletown, Ohio, where Gil set up a solo practice within walking distance of their home. True to his great dancing passion, Gil and Marilyn took disco lessons in the late 1970s, keeping crib notes on the palm of his hand.

Gil was so very deeply loved in the community and beyond that cars were lined up for blocks driven by those wanting to attend his cemetery burial.
