In Response to: In Short

I am sad to read of the passing of Professor George Warfield (On the Campus, Sept. 16). Professor Warfield was my instructor in solid-state physics and my thesis adviser. As a graduate student in 1955, I was lucky and privileged to have been inspired by his teaching. He instilled in me an understanding of solid-state physics, always interpreting theory into a visual and physical image, making solid-state devices my chosen field, and eventually leading me to the creation of the monolithic silicon integrated circuit. As George Heilmeier *62 put it so well, Professor Warfield has influenced a whole generation of electrical engineers.
