Edward H. Kryder ’42

Body

Ed Kryder, teacher and Episcopal priest, died Aug. 27, 2011, in Lititz, Pa.

Ed was born in Akron, Ohio, and prepared at the University School in Cleveland. At Princeton he joined Terrace and majored in English. Even at Princeton his commitment to religion manifested itself. He sang in the University Chapel Choir and was active in Lenten discussion groups.

After graduation, Ed joined the Navy. He was commissioned as an ensign and assigned to duty as supply officer on the USS Firedrake. He served in that capacity in the Pacific theater until the end of the war.

Ed initially found work in business. In 1952 he earned a degree in divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained an Episcopal priest. For several years he served small congregations in rural New York before becoming rector of Calvary Church in Williamsville, N.Y. As leader of this large church in greater Buffalo, Ed found his true calling: teaching, preaching, pastoring, and mentoring. After leaving Calvary Church, Ed taught at Virginia Seminary as an adjunct professor for 20 years. In 1975, the seminary awarded him the degree of doctor of divinity honoris causa.

Ed is survived by his wife, Sally; his sons, Thomas, David, and John; and his daughters, Katrina Ford and Anne Almy-Weber. To them all, the class sends condolences.
