RUSS SLAGIE, our lifelong bachelor, died July 4, 1993, at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Complications arose after he suffered a bad fall in his apartment. Russell was an avid genealogist and had been researching and preparing reports until very recently. He served as a V.P. of the Baltimore County Historical Society for many years.
Russell had always been a resident of Baltimore. He attended Gilman School and operated a real-estate brokerage firm until he was drafted in 1940. He joined the 83rd Infantry Division, but was honorably discharged after 13 months due to his age. Thereafter he became a personnel officer at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.
In the 1930s and 1940s, he acted and sang with the Vagabond Theater, performing in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and other musical comedies. Russ also appeared in several operas at the Baltimore Civic Opera Co. and was a trustee of the Baltimore Opera Co. Russ is survived by three nephews and many grandnephews and nieces.
