John J. Wyckoff ’36

JOHN DIED Aug. 25, 1991, at 78. He was the son of John R. Wyckoff '05 and his grandfather was Class of 1877.

He prepared at Lawrenceville and Horace Mann. At Princeton he majored in philosophy and was a member in of Cannon Club. He received his M.A. In education from Rollins College and taught at the Secondary school level. For a number of years he was the principal of Groveland (Fla.) High School. After retirement teaching he operated his plant nursery in Groveland.

Jack had an outstanding service record during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served in the U.S. Navy and for some time was attached to the Second Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. He was one of the few survivors in the American assault on the island of Tarawa, a Japanese stronghold. He retired from the Navy Reserve in 1969 as a commander.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Retired Officers Association. He held leadership positions in his local chapters of the American Red Cross, the Republican Committee, the Kiwanis Club and the Elks Lodge.

Jack is survived by his wife, K. Barbara, whom he married in 1961, and a daughter Jennifer.
