Francis Gary Bivings ’49

Published in Oct. 25, 1989, issue

We previously reported that Dr. Gary Bivings died sud¬denly on Apr. 19, 1973. Recently obtained information now enables us to prepare this memorial.

Gary was born on July 6, 1927, in Big Spring, Tex., and prepared for Princeton at Andover and Alamo Heights High School. At Princeton, he majored in history and was a member of Cap and Gown. After graduation, Gary attended the Columbia College of Physicians and Sur¬geons and interned at Barnes Hospital, in St Louis. He married Alexia Beck on Dec. 22, 1950, and they had two children, Gary (born in Feb. 1955) and Elizabeth Leigh (born on Apr. 30, 1958). Gary Sr. served as a battalion and regimental surgeon for two years with the 511th Airborne Infantry Regiment, in Ft. Campbell, Ky., and in July 1955, he returned to Barnes Hospital to complete his residency.

Since that time, we had been out of contact with Gary and his family, except for the report of his death. We recently found Alexia in Tucson, and she advises us that Gary practiced cancer surgery there until illness forced him to retire. They were divorced in 1965 but remained friends. Their son Gary completed college at the Univ. of Arizona, received his master's degree from Harvard, and is now a financial consultant in N.Y.C. Their daugh¬ter Leigh is a doctoral student at Stanford. A niece, Susan Whitney '84, graduated from Princeton. The class extends its sympathy to Alexia, Gary, and Leigh; to Gary's sister, Nancy Whitney, of Chicago; and to Susan.
