His hometown was West Caldwell, N.J., where he attended Cleveland High School. At Cleveland, he was a student body leader and active in sports. At Princeton, he joined Dial Lodge but left college at the end of his sophomore year. He then entered the family printing business — at the time a start-up with only three employees. As the company grew, so did Bob’s responsibilities, and by 1972 he was president and later CEO before retiring in 1989.

After leaving the family business, Bob split his time between Hobe Sound, Fla., and Saco, Maine, where he concentrated on his three avocations. He was president of a nature conservancy and a center for the arts and also was an avid golfer.

Bob met his wife, Elsbeth, in grade school and married her the year he left Princeton. The couple had three children and four grandchildren.
