Anna Rubin *00’s new composition, “Shards of Sappho,” is included on the DVD Sounding Out (Everglade Records), featuring computer-generated works by lesbian composers. Inspired by Sappho, the ancient Greek poet, Rubin has woven together quotations in English and Greek from the poet’s work along with computer-generated music evoking a faraway ancient past. Rubin, who composed five works for her 2006 CD Electric Music (Capstone Recordings), is the director of the program in contemporary American music at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her latest work will premiere Jan. 23 in New York City at Roulette, an experimental music venue.
