New Books Voices from the Canefields; Folksongs from Japanese Immigrant Workers in Hawai’i

(Oxford University Press) Odo says folksongs are short stories from the souls of the people. He uses more than 200 Japanese folksongs to explore the culture of imported contract workers on Hawaii's sugar plantations in the late 19th century. Odo was the founding director of the Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American Program.
