Rhodespeople

DEAR SIR:

In response to the Jetter from Joan Bose (PAW, March 12) commenting on sex discrimination in selection of Rhodes Scholars:

One prime consideration is
A Scholar's social value, viz.:
"Debutante and Rhodesman Wed."
Good copy. What if headlines said:
"Male Physician Weds Rhodette,"
Or "Rhodes-Ms., Actor Wedding Set,"
Or, if journalism worsens,
"Nuptials Conjugate Rhodespersons?"
Producing headlines so complex is
Social folly for both sexes.
The quid pro quo conclusion is:
The Rhodesman's hers, but Oxford's his.
