An Exeter graduate, he majored in the School of Public and International Affairs. Crit played freshman and varsity lacrosse and was manager of Express Reunion Agency and a manager of Cap and Gown. He roomed first with Ernie Stewart and Dudley Evans.

Crit joined the V-7 program in 1941. After being commissioned, he served in anti-submarine and convoy duty in the Atlantic and Canal Zone before being transferred to the Pacific. He separated in 1945 as a lieutenant commander.

Crit joined the First National Bank of Boston in 1945 and spent his entire career there, retiring in May 1983 as executive vice president. For many years he was trustee and chairman of the finance committee of Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a former chairman of the finance advisory board of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a member of the Government Securities Committee of the Securities Industry Association.

Crit is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gertrude Shaw Crittenden; his daughter, Penelope; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Gazaway Jr. ’65; his daughter, Jane; and a granddaughter, Joanna Crittenden.
