William Callery Jr. died of heart failure Dec. 27, 2008, in Palo Alto, Calif.

Bill was the son of William Callery ’12 and Irene Daly. He prepared at the Gilman School in Baltimore. At Princeton Bill majored in mechanical engineering and was secretary of the engineering society. He also lettered in football and lacrosse. He was a member of Cap and Gown and roomed all four years with Gordon Meacham.

Immediately after graduation, Bill entered the Navy as an engineering officer. Assignments in naval aviation took him to Seattle, the Admiralty Islands, and the Philippines. He was discharged as a lieutenant in 1946.

In 1947, Bill married Lanie Wright. Initially he worked for Gar Wood Industries in Detroit, but after Lanie contracted poliomyelitis in 1950, the family moved to California and Bill started to work at Hiller Helicopters as an industrial engineer. From 1966 to 1981 he was corporate personnel manager at Varian Associates.

The family enjoyed the social and athletic opportunities offered in California. These included occasional skiing and year-round golf. In all these activities Bill was surrounded by a host of friends and a loving and supportive family.

Lanie predeceased Bill. To his children, Tripp, Tina, and Terry; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, the class sends condolences.
