In 1937 he came to the United States with his mother and stepfather and attended the Eaglebrook School and Lawrenceville. He entered Princeton in 1944, but left in 1945 to serve in the British (Queens Own Cameron Highlanders) and Indian armies, and was separated in 1948 with the rank of captain. He returned to Princeton, affiliated with our class, majored in history, was president of Terrace Club, and roomed with C. Frederick Buechner ’47 and Archibald G. MacArthur ’47.

Mike worked for five years with National Cash Register before switching to teaching, spending the next seven years at Blair Academy, where he became director of admissions. He earned a master’s degree at Wesleyan and resumed teaching, this time at Deerfield, where for the next 29 years he taught English and history and led Deerfield students on many trips to India and the Far East. He retired in 1994, “a special person and beloved teacher,” according to Teri Towe ’70.

Mike eventually settled in Florida. He died Dec. 10, 2008, in hospice in Port Charlotte. He is survived by his stepsister, Ruth Paul, and many friends. His brother Nigel predeceased him.
