Re: “Three Presidents in Sweats” (From the Archives, Oct. 21), here’s the story from the late ’80s.

The campus was filled with undergraduates proudly displaying their class consciousness by wearing sweatshirts emblazoned with P’88. As grad students, my wife, Lisa *88, and I wanted equal opportunity. So we dreamed up the Ph.D. design and ordered some sweatshirts.

A few years later, Lisa was helping to organize graduate alumni events, and thought it would be good to remind alumni of three of the graduate school’s most important contributions to the University. Presidents Goheen, Bowen, and Shapiro, all Princeton Ph.D.s, graciously agreed to the photo opportunity.

One last thing: Lisa is now president and CEO of a leading biotech company, so the picture actually features four presidents in sweats.
