George died April 5, 2010.

Born in Philadelphia, George came to Princeton from Episcopal Academy, majored in sociology, and was active in Quadrangle Club, JV football, and varsity swimming. His roommates were Nate Bachman, Mike Bowman, Bill Danforth, Lee Ford, Frank Ittel, Bob Knisley, Bob Mack, Ron Nelson, and Bill Yohn. After Princeton, he served three years as an officer in the Marine Corps.

George retired from MIT in June 2001, completing 15 years as the senior development officer devoted to getting large capital gifts for the institute. George planned and executed two major campaigns. He later developed a consulting practice devoted to helping nonprofits plan and execute major fundraising campaigns.

George was class agent from the 41st to 50th-reunion Annual Giving campaigns. Each campaign exceeded 62 percent participation, and the 50th had 80.3 percent participation.

In recent years, George suffered from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (twice), Parkinson’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. He was a runner and athlete all his life, and these diseases severely restricted him.

George was courageous, and the support from his wife, Pat, was an inspiration to all of us. In addition to Pat, he is survived by his children, Susan ’80, Ken, and Whit; stepchildren Will and Amy; and six grandchildren.
