He also served as a White House aide under President Franklin Roosevelt. He met his future wife, Ruth Bisping, at the Sulgrave Club in Washington in 1944.

After the war, Bill worked 59 years as a senior partner in the Philadelphia investment firm of Elkins & Co., which eventually merged with Prudential Securities, where he became a vice president. He served on the board of governors of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and as a director of the Quaker City Gear Works.
Bill was on the board of trustees of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. He spent his summers on Lake Sunapee, N.H., where he most enjoyed his precious times with Ruth and their family. He served Princeton as a Special Gifts solicitor, among other positions.
