Lindsay died May 21, 2010, in Minneapolis, where he had been a lifelong resident.
After graduating from Princeton with a major in economics, he attended Harvard Law School for a year until his education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served as torpedo officer on a destroyer and received seven combat medals. He then returned to studying law at the University of Minnesota Law School.
Lindsay dedicated his professional life to the betterment of children and their families. For 18 years he served as chief judge of the Juvenile Court of Hennepin County during a period when juvenile law was largely undeveloped, and many of his cases became precedents in the field. He was a longtime director and president of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. He also served on the boards of the Boys’ Club, the YMCA, the Washburn Child Guidance Center, and the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Jean Johansen Arthur, and by two of their children. He is survived by his son, Lindsay Arthur Jr. ’65; daughter Julie Arthur-Sherman; grandchildren Lindsay Arthur III ’94, Andrew Arthur ’96, and Signe and Ross Sherman; and five great-grandchildren.
