John died Dec. 29, 2008.

He prepared for Princeton at Western Reserve Academy and Hotchkiss. At Princeton his major was history and he graduated with honors. He was on the freshman 150-pound crew and the Prince news board, and joined the Glee Club and Terrace Club.

John enrolled in Harvard Law School in September 1941, but when war broke out he enlisted in the Coast Guard. He spent some time as an instructor at the academy before being assigned as a navigator and communications officer in the Atlantic. He then transferred to the Pacific theater as an executive officer on a cargo ship. He was separated as lieutenant in June 1945.

He returned to Harvard, graduating in 1948. He moved to San Francisco and started his own law practice in August 1950. By our 25th reunion, John had become commissioner of the Superior Court of the State of California for Los Angeles County. He retired in March 1988.

John is survived by his wife, Jeri Ann Jarnagan Alexander; his daughter, Pamela Christine; and his son, James. He was predeceased by his daughter Julia Grace.
