Dick, also known to us as “R.L.,” died Dec. 24, 2010, of a stroke in Evanston, Ill.
Born in New York City and raised in Chicago, Dick came to Princeton from Mercersburg Academy, where he was class valedictorian. At Princeton, he majored in politics, joined the golf team, played many intramural sports, and took his meals at Dial. His senior-year roommate was George Russell.
Following service as an Army officer during World War II, Dick spent his entire career in Chicago with Republic Management Co., which invested in and managed real-estate properties. A racket-sport aficionado, he was four-time city champion in squash and competed nationally in father-son tennis with his son, Richard III ’62. He was a lifelong follower of Northwestern’s teams as well as a fan of the Bears and the Cubs. He traveled to Europe often and spent many winters in Palm Beach.
He was an avid and proud member of the Class of 1936 and greatly enjoyed attending Reunions and following Princeton football.
Predeceased by two wives, Ellen Munster and Joan Truesdale, and his fiancée, Ruth Ruggles, Dick is survived by his son; daughter Carol McGrew; three granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren.
