It wasn’t because of deficient grades that Bob left Princeton at the end of sophomore year, Bill Sutphin recalls; it was because of his patriotism. Our armed forces were bogged down in Korea and Bob volunteered for the Marines but was turned down for physical reasons.
He died Nov. 11, 2010, in Sacramento, Calif., at the age of 79.
Second-year roommate Sutphin remembers Bob as “highly intelligent” and well regarded by faculty members. It has been learned that Bob graduated magna cum laude in history from Columbia and received a master’s degree in social science at Bryn Mawr. It also has been learned that Bob was deeply involved in helping shape welfare reform and labor practices in California.
To his wife, the former Joyce McNair; his daughters from his first marriage, Ruth, Jennifer, and Sarah Rosenberg; Joyce’s children, Duncan, Heather, and Robin Miller; and grandchildren Mira and Jocelyn Asher, a heartfelt salute to our public-spirited classmate.
